What is Anxiety? A person suffering from anxiety can experience a general state of constant fear and worry. This state can include nervousness and apprehension that affects the person both psychologically and physically. Anxiety affects the way a person feels and behaves as a result of often uncontrollable, obsessive thoughts. These thoughts can leave a person with the inability to keep still, remain calm, and can interfere with sleep patterns. Cases of anxiety range from mild to severe, ultimately affecting the person’s daily life and ability to function. Often times, those suffering from anxiety do not even know what they are constantly worrying about.

Many people do not understand what is anxiety even though it is a growing disorder in our complex society.

The exact cause of anxiety is unknown. Anxiety can stem from a mental or physical condition. It is most commonly triggered by stress that is usually a result of environmental factors such as stress from work or school. In other cases, anxiety can result from psychological factors including stress about the future, traumatic experiences, or personal weakness. Other factors that can influence anxiety can be from medical conditions such as asthma, anemia, or infections. The side effects of certain medications used to treat these medical conditions have been linked to the causes of anxiety. In addition to these causes, those who partake in substance use and abuse commonly suffer from anxiety.

 

Common Anxiety Treatments

Treatments can vary for those diagnosed with anxiety disorders based on the person’s problem and preference. In some cases a doctor, usually a psychiatrist, can prescribe medication. Medication does not serve as a cure for anxiety, but rather a means to maintain the condition. Medications include a range of anti-depressants or anti-anxiety prescriptions. Psychotherapy is usually paired with medication in an effort to control and reduce the level of anxiety. Other types of treatment that are not medically associated include relaxation exercises to restore the mental state of the individual and regular exercise, which is recommended to reduce anxiety and panic attacks.
