What is Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)?

What is Restless Legs Syndrome? Restless Legs Syndrome or RLS is a feeling/sensation disorder that makes people experience an obnoxious feeling in different parts of their bodies when they go to bed. The most common area of the body that restless legs syndrome occurs in is the legs, but it can also effect the arms, abdomen, and chest as well. There is not a lot of knowledge about the causes of restless legs syndrome, but it is believed to be genetic. Many researchers have found that restless leg syndrome is directly associated with a dysfunction in the basal ganglia circuits of the brain. These circuits use dopamine as a neurotransmitter. Dopamine is needed for smooth and focused muscle movement and motion. A break in these circuits causes involuntary movements, which is directly related to restless leg syndrome. In some cases there is a very obvious reason for the disorder (the lacking of a certain mineral for instance). In cases such as these, treatment for the cause will usually solve the problem. In women, RLSĀ  sometimes occurs during pregnancy.
